1 INTRODUCTION

The RICKARD range of temperature controllers has been designed specifically to match the extensive range of RICKARD VAV air diffusion products. Whether the need is for a simple, stand-alone controller or a sophisticated controller with BMS capability, RICKARD has a product that will fulfill that need.
Our controllers have been purpose designed, exclusively for use with our own products and have been operating successfully on many sites around the world for more than 15 years. While the basic control function has remained unchanged, the controllers are continually updated to ensure that full use is made of the latest advances in control technology. A full range of accessories is available and includes items such as wall mounted thermostats, infra-red remote control units, triacs for the proportional control of electrical re-heaters and a change-over facility for full VAV control in winter heating mode. Essentially the range consists of 3 different types of controller; "Stand-alone Modular", "Stand-alone dedicated" intelligent"varilon" controls.

2 MODULAR CONTROLS

This range was developed for general use and specifically for use in buildings where the occupancy churn rate is high and it is frequently necessary to change the office layout. In this situation the diffuser control system also needs to be flexible to accommodate these changes without major disruptions to the occupants, while at the same time keeping the costs of changes to a minimum.

The Modular controller is a stand-alone controller in the sense that it cannot communicate with any other control system but operates independently. The term "modular" is derived from the fact that the various control components are connected to each other by means of RJ (telephone) type jacks. Each diffuser is configured in such a way that it may be converted to a "Master" diffuser by simply plugging in the necessary control components. As a result of this feature, all diffusers on a particular project may be installed as "Basic" units without controls and only after final occupancy has been determined, is it necessary to decide which diffusers are to be "Masters" and which are "Slaves". Any changes during the life of the building can be accommodated by simply unplugging and re-connecting control components in the new configuration. The building maintenance technician can easily effect these changes in a matter of minutes. Each Master controller is capable of controlling up to six diffusers. Available options include automatic changeover for VAV winter heating mode, wall-mounted thermostats and proportional heating using triac controlled re-heaters

3 DEDICATED CONTROLS

When the flexibility of the modular controls is not required, positions of master and slave diffusers is known and future changes is not expected, “dedicated” controls may be specified. In this case the diffusers will be manufactured as a dedicated master or slave. The power pack and triac interface board (heating) or interface board (no heating) is mounted in a neck box which is fixed to the diffuser. Each Master controller can control up to 6 diffusers. Available options include automatic changeover for VAV winter heating mode, wall-mounted thermostats and proportional heating using triac controlled re-heaters.

4 VARILON CONTROLS

Top of the range Varilon controls are the latest addition to the range and are LonWorks¨ based for full BMS compatibility. VARILON controllers are based on the LonMark8502 VAV Space comfort controller functional profile.

The controllers have various sensing and user interface options ranging from an underplate (ceiling) sensor with network temperature adjustment to a wired wall unit with sensor and adjusting buttons as well as a ceiling mounted infra red receiver with space sensor and adjusting by means of an infra red remote.

A duct (source) temperature sensor can be used for automatic changeover from cooling to heating on the basis of measured duct temperature.

Each controller can control up to five "Slave" diffusers and installation as "Basic" units without controls with later installation of the controller is recommended. Slave connectors use RJ type jacks.

The controller allows for triac modulating control of a re-heater of up to 2 kW on each of the five slaves.

The controller can be fitted with a flow sensor which is installed in the neck of the "Master" diffuser and flow is derived by setting the flow area of all the diffusers controlled by the master. The flow sensor is a single point measuring device but has a calibration curve for the particular diffuser type to which it is fitted, yielding sensing accuracy of better than 10% of maximum flow.

The controller has an auxiliary contact which can be switched from the wall unit or infra red remote and can be used for switching lights, blinds or similar.

5 ALTERNATIVE CONTROLS

In some instances it may be necessary to fit Rickard diffusers with BMS controls supplied by others.
In this case it is possible to fit a factory wired interface PC board with RJ type sockets, in the diffuser. This board will provide the link between the Rickard components and the external controller and also link together any number of diffusers served by a single controller.

If the diffuser has a re-heater fitted, the interface would incorporate either a relay for on/off type heater control or a triac to provide modulating control of the heater. The heater input signal would typically be a 24V AC pulse width modulating signal. For larger orders, customised interface boards may be designed and built.

LHA TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER

APPLICATIONS

  • STAND ALONE TEMPERATURE
    CONTROLLER FOR VARIABLE
    GEOMETRY VAV DIFFUSERS

ADVANTAGES

  • Flexibility
  • Simplicity
  • Single responsibility for diffuser and diffuser controller
  • reverse changeover
  • remote setpoint
  • heater control

ADVANTAGES

Master and slave diffusers are identical when they leave the factory-masters and slaves selected on site as required

All interconnections by means of RJ type jacks - possibility of wrong connections eliminated

Because the controls are designed specifically for operation with the RICKARD diffusers, the problem of split responsibility is eliminated.

Full VAV volume control in the winter heating mode by means of automatic changeover based on supply air temperature.

Option of wall mounted setpoint adjustment facility, with or without digital display.

Pulse Width Modulation output signal for proportional heater control by means of triac switching.

VARILON CONTROLLER FOR LONWORKS NETWORKS

CONTROLLER

APPLICATIONS

  • DIFFUSER CONTROLLER FOR
    BUILDING MANAGEMENT
    SYSTEMS (BMS)

ADVANTAGES

  • interoperability through open protocol NETWORKING
  • Lonmark 8502
    FUNCTIONAL PROFILE
  • Single responsibility for diffuser and diffuser controller
  • flexibility - simple master/slave conversion
  • simplified commissioning

ADVANTAGES

Interoperability with other system components in a Lonworks¨ network is ensured.

Varilon controllers are based on the Lonmark 8502 VAV Space Comfort Controller Functional Profile, incorporating all mandatory network variables for further ease of interoperability.

Varilon controllers have been developed and tested for compatibility with all Rickard variable volume diffusers. Diffuser airflow and temperature characteristics are pre-programmed into their respective controllers. Controllers are supplied with wiring and fittings to match diffusers thereby ensuring compatibility and simplified site installation.

Master Diffusers and Slave Diffusers are physically identical, thereby enabling Master Diffusers to be selected on site as required.

Commissioning is greatly simplified by entry of parameters into a computer connected to the Lonworks¨ network. Commissioning is greatly simplified by adjustment of configuration parameters through any generic Lonworks¨ configuration software tools via a PC, or through the BMS. VARILON controllers can also be pre-commissioned in the factory. Lonworks¨ connectivity allows full BMS functionality plus internet/intranet/dialup accessibility dependant on BMS configuration
